Sunday 17th April is World Malbec Day.

If I was to ask, where would you say that Malbec originated from?

It is actually France! Yes although Malbec is now famously grown in the Mendoza region of Argentina it’s roots are indeed french. So much so that Malbec is one of the only six grapes in the world which is allowed in a Bordeaux blend. Surprised yet?

The warm climate of Mendoza proved to be a winner for the red grape after being snubbed in Bordeaux in favour of other varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon due to their durability and versatility. Known as Cot in the South of France, the abundance of sun, low humidity, rocky soil and minimal rain allows Malbec to thrive in Argentina.

Malbec however has flourished over in the New World. As well as it’s formidable success in Argentina it is now classed as the third most widely planted grape in Chile. The difference? Chilean Malbec has a higher tannin content than Argentinian Malbec so it is usually blended with other grapes such as Merlot and Petit Verdot to make a smoother, easy drinking wine. Argentina also stand as the only country to have kept the original Malbec vines of true French heritage.

Regardless, Liquid Indulgence’s favourite region for a grown up Malbec has to be Mendoza. The wines are deep garnet red in colour filled with purity and richness. The tannins are intense and beautifully structured with notable hints of tobacco, chocolate and vanilla. Malbec’s are a must for meat lovers. This grape pairs ridiculously well with a big juicy rib-eye steak. If you’re wanting to add a little more elegance to your evening try pink lamb or duck breast.

To celebrate World Malbec Day this Sunday we are launching our new range of Argentinian wines. Our premium Terra range features a Torrontes and two Malbecs which truly capture the exceptional continental climate of Mendoza.
