What is Grenache?


Grenache, also known as Garnacha, is one of the world’s most widely planted red grape varieties. Both Old World and New World vineyards are avid fans of the grape and to prove it’s popularity ‘World Grenache Day’ is celebrated every year on September 3rd.


Whilst the origin of the grape is uncertain, experts reckon the grape was most likely created in Spain. Towards the end of the last century, with the exception of the white grape Airen, it was Spain’s most commonly planted grape meaning that it even gave Tempranillo (which is renowned as Spain’s speciality vine) a run for it’s money. This century however, thanks to new EU vine schemes, Garnacha plantings are becoming more sporadic in Spain.

Chateauneuf Du Pape

Don’t be fooled thouGrenachegh, this luscious red grape creates some of the most sought after and expensive wines in the whole world. Starting with Chateauneuf du Pape.

Chateauneuf du Pape is perhaps one of the most cherished wines on the planet. It is often a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah with small amounts of other French grapes thrown in such as Cinsault and Terret Noir.

What you may be surprised to learn is that Chateauneuf du Pape isn’t just a red wine, it can also be a white! Garnacha is still used but it is pressed and fermented without the red grape skin, creating a very palatable, earthy white wine.

So Quaffable!

Grenache is a late ripening grape and is most suited to growing in hot, dry conditions. In a blend Grenache adds body and structure to the wine. Popular blends includes Syrah/Shiraz, Mouvedre and Cinsault.

In the Australia’s wine world, Grenache is compares to Cabernet Sauvignon in terms of importance. With that thought in mind I thought this blog would be a perfect time to recommend the Rude Mechanicals Three Monkeys. A great blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro that you will find very quaffable. Pair with barbecued meatballs or roasted duck. Perfect now that we are finding our way to summer.
