Patxaran (Basque), called Pacharan in Spanish, is a sloe-flavoured liqueur commonly drank in Navarre, the Pyrenees and the rest of Spain. This ancient recipe involves steeping locally grown endrinas (sloe berries) in alcohol for a couple of months. The liqueur is made by soaking the sloe berries which are collected from the blackthorn, in an anise-flavoured spirit for several months. Then adding anise and a small number of coffee beans and a vanilla pod results in a smooth, sweet warming liqueur with a gentle aniseed taste. Served with ice or add to a glass of fizz, it is the perfect end to that special occasion.
